Indianapolis Released Inmates
Finding released inmates in Indianapolis means searching across several systems. Marion County holds most local detainees at the downtown jail facility, while the Indiana Department of Correction manages people serving state prison sentences. This page walks through the main tools available to search current and recently released inmates connected to Indianapolis, including how to reach the Marion County Sheriff's Office, how VINE notifications work, and what state databases let you look up inmate status by name.
Indianapolis Quick Facts
Marion County Jail - Released Inmates Search
The Marion County Sheriff's Office runs the jail that serves Indianapolis. Most people arrested in the city go here first. You can search current inmates and look up recent releases through the county's online inmate search tool. The jail sits at 695 Justice Way, Indianapolis, IN 46203. The main jail phone line is (317) 327-1700. If you need to speak with someone about an inmate, staff are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Marion County inmate search lets you look up people by name. Results show current custody status, booking date, and charges. This tool covers people held at the county facility. It does not pull records from state prisons.
Marion County falls under the jurisdiction of Marion County's public records system. Arrest and booking records follow Indiana's Access to Public Records Act, found at IC 5-14-3-3. Most booking data becomes public once a person is formally charged.
The Indianapolis jail processes hundreds of bookings each week. People can be transferred to state facilities if they receive a sentence of more than one year. After transfer, the county jail record may no longer show them as active. That is when the Indiana Offender Locator becomes the right tool to use.

The portal is updated regularly. If a name does not appear, it may mean the person was released, transferred, or the name is entered differently in the system.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is the primary law enforcement agency for the city and county. IMPD makes arrests that feed into the Marion County booking system. Their headquarters is at 50 N. Alabama Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. The non-emergency line is (317) 327-3811.
IMPD maintains public records including incident reports and arrest logs. You can request an incident report online through the IMPD records request portal. For general questions, email impd.publicaffairs@indy.gov. Records related to arrests made by IMPD will appear in the Marion County jail system once booking is complete.
IMPD covers all of Marion County under a consolidated city-county structure. This means the same department handles calls whether you are in downtown Indianapolis or the suburban townships. Arrests handled by IMPD go to the Marion County Jail, not separate city lockups.
Indiana Offender Locator - State Prison Releases
People who serve time in state prison rather than the county jail appear in the Indiana Department of Correction's Indiana Offender Locator. This tool covers everyone currently in IDOC custody and those recently released from a state facility. It is free to use and searchable by name.
Results include the facility where the person is held (or was last held), sentence details, projected release dates, and supervision status. If someone from Indianapolis served time at a state facility, this is where you will find that record. The database updates regularly but may not show releases from the last 24-48 hours.
For people who have been released and are on parole or probation, IDOC's records will still reflect their supervision status. The Offender Locator does not require you to create an account or pay a fee. Just enter the first and last name and search.
Under 210 IAC 3-1-6, the Department of Correction is required to keep and release certain records about offenders in state custody. That includes release dates and current location information for people under IDOC supervision.
You can also submit a formal records request to IDOC through the IDOC offender records request page. This is useful for getting detailed documentation not available through the Offender Locator.
VINE and Indiana SAVIN - Victim Notification
VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) is a free service that alerts registered users when an inmate's custody status changes. This includes releases, transfers, and court appearances. You can register through VINELink for Indiana or call 866-959-8463 to set up phone alerts.
Indiana also runs its own version called Indiana SAVIN. You can search by offender name or ID through SAVIN and also register for automatic notifications. Both services cover Marion County jail and Indiana state facilities. They are designed to help victims and families stay informed without having to check manually.
VINE and SAVIN work best when you register with a specific person's name or offender number. Once registered, you get notified by phone, email, or text. You do not need to keep checking the database yourself.
Additional State Tools for Released Inmates
Indiana Courts MyCase is a public court record search tool at public.courts.in.gov/mycase. It lets you look up criminal case filings, sentencing records, and case dispositions across all Indiana courts. This is helpful when you want to understand what charges someone faced or what sentence a court imposed.
The Indiana County Jail Public Portal aggregates booking data from multiple Indiana county jails. Marion County may not always feed into this system in real time, so use the direct Marion County tool for the most current data. The statewide portal is better for checking jails in surrounding counties.
The Indiana Sex Offender Registry is maintained at iCrimeWatch for Indiana. If you are looking for someone with a sex offense conviction, this registry shows current registered addresses and offense details. Registration is required by state law and applies after release from any facility.
For a formal criminal history check, the Indiana State Police offers limited criminal history records. You can request one online for $16.32 or by mail for $15 through the ISP Criminal History page. This is an official record, not a search of the inmate database.
Public Records Law in Indianapolis
Indiana's Access to Public Records Act governs what the public can request from government agencies. The key provisions are found at IC 5-14-3-4. Arrest records, booking sheets, and court filings are generally public. Some records may be restricted if charges were dismissed or the person was never convicted.
Marion County follows state law under IC 36-2-13, which sets out how county agencies manage and release public records. If you request a record and it is denied, you have the right to appeal that decision. Contact the county's public access counselor or seek guidance from the Indiana Public Access Counselor's office.
Courts in Indianapolis operate under the Marion Superior Court and Marion Circuit Court. Criminal case records are accessible through Indiana Courts MyCase. Older records may need to be requested in person at the courthouse.
